Governments wobble in the face of demonstrations. It doesn’t actually deter them from their course, as fox hunting fans, miners and picketing lorry drivers have discovered, but it’s good for a few knee trembles from those in marginal constituencies.

The Con-Dems may have survived the Rally against the Cuts, the Rally against Debt may exact a few concessions – but will the government survive until then?

Next Sunday there is to be a mass demonstration that will surely topple them.

The cross-stitch champions are massing on Kings Cross Station to campaign for Fair Fares!

Accompanied by flasks of tea and jam sandwiches, they will bring the normal business of King’s Cross to a halt ‘whilst crafting petitions in the shape of train carriages’.

Wha’d’ya mean you had no idea that so many cross-stitchers were cross about being stitched up by the railway companies – don’t you keep abreast of modern trends?

The world, it seems, is full to bursting with ladies who train, accompanied by their needles and thread, and come Saturday they will be making their protest known in the only way they can – stitching pretty pictures of the Fat Controller en masse.

UKUnpick are rumoured to be infiltrating the rally, and the police have promised that they will only needle known troublemakers.

Oh dear – Metropolitan Plod will be looking at all those needles and considering the possible dangers to the travelling public. Arrests will be made, lectures about offensive weapons given. After all, we don’t want too many pricks involved in politics, do we now?

Most cross-stitch needles are less than 4″ long. Protesting cross-stitchers better check that none of their needles or scissors are longer than that length, or plod will nick them under the offensive weapons acts.
