I Think We’ve Been Here Before
It may surprise you to know that we on the management side of the Raccoon Arms have occasional episodes in our lives that don’t involve pulling pints and breaking-up fights. Both me and ‘er upstairs have each enjoyed one of these episodes over the last 24 hours. This would explain the absence of a new parish notice pinned to the door from 9.00am today. Therefore, to plug the gap, one last chance to see something some of you may not have seen before. A full year old now, yet unhappily as prescient as ever…

Filled with dismay, I watched/rewatched these 3 videos and wondered if there was any hope for humanity . Then I went for an apres lunchtime nap (I’m OLD that’s my excuse) walk with The Bestes Frau In The World. Passing an open office door I picked up some snippets of the animated discussion inside between the young professionals. The issue they were debating, which question of great moment were they so passionately trying to discern? Where does Kyle Minogue get her kebabs and does she order them via her iPhone app?. There , right there, I knew humanity was doomed as a species.

I notice that in human endeavour many manifestations of power and glory get larger and larger. Children have become a rabid preoccupation of our society currently. They can be poor, abused, in a festering gang, groomed, abducted, murdered, kept out of Oxbridge, killed by their own parent or murdered by their own dad because mum has got another bloke. So many things can happen to kids. So a quite thin lady comes to their rescue some years back. She gradually gets larger and larger, more gaudy, more colourful. She floats on high as a kiddy guru. Like a title to Monty Python’s flying Circus. Like cathedrals, Norman castles, Chinese Walls, pyramids, city offices, Hampton Court, tycoons palaces and government offices. The lady gets wider and taller and more noticeable as she inflates. I shall miss her style, her colourful flamboyance and her ‘wise pronouncements’. Amazing what you can do with other people’s money, generously donated. Funny though as Mother Tereasa became a sainted one, she shrunk! Even she is alleged to have dissipated money a tad unwisely. Where money is concerned a person can nearly always be got at! She just could not stop fund raising….children again!. Successful women being got at again.Maggie Thatcher gets posthumously blamed for bad things like greed. Benazir Bhutto for ‘corruption’, exile then assassination! I find this rather unsettling. What about Malila? Will she get murdered or trounced in the end….watch this space!

The risk of children to murder is a perennial concern. I recall the dreadful Eve Pollard on TV once, claiming that more and more kiddies were being murdered each year. Someone else pointed out that the statistics showed no such thing, which she cattily dismissed with words to the effect that you could dis/prove anything with statistics. This kind of overlooks the fact that a death is not something that can be easily counter or not counted in light of, say, a definitional change.
For the record, the numbers of homicide victims under teh age of 16 in England & Wales are:
Calendar years:
1991 – 93
1992 – 68
1993 – 69
1994 – 76
1995 – 80
1996 – 80
1997 – 82Financial years:
1997/98 – 71
1998/99 – 87
1999/00 – 67
2000/01 – 100
2001/02 – 76
2002/03 – 89
2003/04 – 71
2004/05 – 60
2005/06 – 47

Interestingly, the annual average child homicide under a Labour Government is around 68. Under the Coalition it was 54. POn that basis, around 50 extra kids are alive who could have been expected to be murdered if Labour had hung on any longer.
And they all said the Coalition wouldn’t work !
