What do you do with a drunken parrot?
What do you do with a drunken parrot,
What do you do with a drunken parrot,
What do you do with a drunken parrot,
Earl-eye in the morning!
It’s spring in the Northern Territories now. The locals tend to turn to drink during the wet season. But it’s not the humans that are the problem. It’s the birds. Red-collared lorikeets to be exact.
It’s thought that the birds get drunk on fermented fruit, possibly with a virus exasperating the problem as the bird’s alcoholic stuper tends to last for a few days which is a lot longer than the equivalent problem in humans.
When the lorikeets get drunk they lose their fear of people and act a lot friendlier than normal. Just like humans in this aspect. The birds collect in local markets. Just like drunk teenagers in this aspect. This drunken state is also dangerous for the birds as they fall from trees and stagger around streets. Just like drunks in this aspect. Oh, wait. Not quite. Drunks don’t tend to fall from trees. Do they?
Anyway if you want to see some drunk parrots watch the video below.

New meaning to the phrase ‘sick as a parrot’. Incidentally, you don’t have to get rainbow loris pissed to make them friendly. Put nectar out in your garden for them often enough and they’ll eventually become very trusting, and some will feed from a dish in your hand. Lovely, eh? Apart from their largely liquid diet meaning they shit in astonishing quantities and can make your car look like the target in a gobbing contest.

They are very popular with UK zoos for ‘parrot encounter’ enclosures, where they sell you nectar in little plastic cups. They always have Kleenex and wetwipes next to the sales point.
Always.
