A Very Short But Very Wise Post

Well, yes – entirely agree, but the trouble is, we are where we are now. Where do we go from here?
I’d suggest the following;
1) Make it very clear to the banks – all banks – that if any of them go bust in the future, they go bust.
2) Change the regulatory regime to ensure seperation in some clear way between a bank’s retail sector and it’s ‘casino’ sector.
3) If they do, Government will as a matter of course nationalise their retail sector, and guarantee deposits. The casino bit will just go.
4) Kick the BoE into being an effective bank regulator.
5) Let them get on with it.
6) Concentrate on rebuilding the nation’s balance sheet – in the end, that affects all of us. -

In one word?
Indeed!

This was a chance squandered to break up the banks end the ‘monopoly’ of the big four. Brown squandered it for two reasons
1. He panicked
2. It gave his party its clause four moment in nationalising two banks, and very nearly three.
No Nationalistion under any circumstances as it gives the State a further way into your wallet
A bust bank should be placed into administration and broken up.

I suggest nationalisation only as a means to ensure that the rest of us can get on with our normal business. If the retail sector of a bank goes down, it would at least make everyone’s current account and savings deposits inaccessable, possibly for some weeks or months whilst the administration was sorted out. At worst, a bank going down would take not just the shareholders’ money, but the customers’ as well; that would be prevented by immediate government (or perhaps BoE) take-over. Normal business could continue while the bank’s remains were sorted out. That’s the sole reason.

The sentiment of Simon Jenkins’ comment is very uncharacteristic of the Guardianista mentality; it actually smacks of sanity.

That worried me too, but I think even ‘the bleeding obvious’ is starting to sink in

Totally nothing to do with the subject but perhaps this lady could do with a little support.
