The Tap Room Video Show
A little light relief in a week of doom ‘n’ gloom – a couple of videos as a break between the news, albeit ones that address issues far from funny. The first is a new ‘un, whereas the second has been around a month or so. Some of you I know have already seen it, but for those who haven’t, be warned: It contains VERY STRONG LANGUAGE and themes of an ADULT NATURE. Also, it may not be around for much longer, as the ever-witty BBC tried to block it worldwide due to the heinous crime of using about ten seconds of the BBC4 logo at the beginning. For the first time, I disputed a copyright claim with YouTube and am awaiting a decision. While I wait, the video remains. Have fun while it’s still allowed…

‘Also, it may not be around for much longer,’
FWIW, if anyone can’t watch these till later and wants to timeshift their viewing, but is unsure how to do that – can’t be too many of you in this day and age, though, surely? – the simplest method is to select Firefox as your browser – whichever browser you normally use, it’s still worth having Chrome, IE and Firefox all installed so as to make use of each of their better merits when necessary – make sure you have installed the add-on called ‘Video Downloadhelper’, and once the video is running in Firefox, save it.
I haven’t time to watch them in full now, but I already have them stashed away for later . Hope that may be of help to someone

Just one point for absolute clarity, the add-on is Firefox specific. You add it to Firefox. You can’t use it in IE or Chrome

Cromwell University? Perhaps you should also see the University of Bums on Seats (UBS) website at http://cynicalbastards.com/ubs/ if you don’t already know it. They also offer http://cynicalbastards.com/ikaka/ as a website selling furniture suitable for student lodgings.

“Tenant-quality” furniture with “time release scratches – a guarantee that you can take some of your tenants’ deposit money” – many of us have been there! (And some of us look embarrassedly about our current abodes, unfortunately!)

I’m surprised they’ve ‘buried’ this today, really, unless it is just to save Grayling’s blushes. Waving goodbye to something described as “a perverse incentive for the innocent to plead guilty” has to be welcomed.
-
December 3, 2015 at 4:13 pm -
Note that it isn’t entirely Grayling’s fault: it was a plan put forward by Civil Servants in his ministry. Plenty of things have unintended consequences that are obvious in hindsight, but this was obviously daft from the outset. Fines aren’t easily collected from those with limited means, let alone a range of other charges. The question is – how do you punish poor criminals?
-
December 3, 2015 at 5:54 pm -
Same was true of Osborne’s ‘Pasty Tax’ a few Budgets ago – the Treasury civil servants had proposed it to a number of his predecessors but they all spotted the elephant-trap and rejected it. For some reason Gideon jumped straight in it, they must have been laughing all the way to their index-linked pension pots.
Despite some of his other traits, Gove is quite a smart political operator and eventually recognises the value of pragmatism, particularly the principle that when you’re in a hole, the first tactic is to stop digging.

The BBC… videos… copyright problems…
I was expecting to finally see the “brave”, “astonishing”, “formidable”, “extraordinary”, “celebrated” & “truly historic” speech that Hilary Benn MP gave yesterday, urging Brimstone to be rained down on someone or other, but no!Having had access denied by the Beeb due to geographic location – and having forgotten to power-up the usual work-around – anticipation increased hourly as report after report informed me of Mr Benn’s adventure in the changing-room, re-appearing in full warrior garb. Frustration mounted – history was being made & I couldn’t see it! – but finally another outlet uploaded it & I sat down, ready to be blown away as if by a half-tonne of ordnance.
But no (again)! The obviously mis-labelled video showed nothing but a reedy-voiced finger-jabber, making a feeble justification for war because “four gay men” had been killed or summat. Those bastards needed to be taught a lesson, of that he had no doubt – and those fomenting ‘n’ financing terrorism & dis-respecting human-rights would be pummelled into democratic dust, and then “we” would rebuild the place & there would be elections! Who was this mad man? I have no idea, but apparently the argument was won & so we’ll just have to get used to being at war with, I think, Saudi Arabia. (Car-owners would be advised to start filling empty plastic bottles with petrol as the price looks set to rise.)
(Oh God, this talk of the BBC has just reminded me that I have a matter pending, a pointless final throw of the dice with their complaints’ department; the Trust’s graduate recruitment program have a stall set up permanently in the foyer of the prestigious Cromwell University, it would seem!).

Geographic location is no problem, if you really are really desperate to watch BBC/Sky or any other shite Brit telly. Get the free FilmOn player, which offers a huge choice of TV from all around the world. You can even record the programmes with the built in recorder.
Here in Catalunya (WE ARE NOT ESPAÑA!) it works perfectly, unlike the crappy BBC iPlayer for which you have to use a VPN to access, and was always buffering up itss own arse, making it impossible to watch anyway! And the “live” FilmOn transmissions are always a few seconds behind the LIVE transmissions, so I’d reckon a lot of Brit´s would escape persecution from the Crapita Gestapo goons, chasing up on the TV tax? Personally, I am quite happy to be rid of having to watch pay for the BBC, (apart from of course, Pet´s wonderful programmes).-

Sorry, a few typos, but that`s because I have to use a Spanish keyboard!

¡Gracias, Phil! I usually use AceStream without problem when, that is, I can nick my other half’s laptop as my set-up is – ahem – antiquated. But it’s awaiting a new screen, which one of those ‘family visits’ will be hand-delivering this weekend, ISIS-permitting.
I’m not in Spain, either, but Canarias… and Correos have already smashed one eBay-replacement to smithereens – hence the above!
One of the first things I noticed when I arrived here was a sticker adorning a load of lamp-posts: “Dear tourist, please remember you are NOT in Spain!!!” Oh-oh, I thought, this is going to be interesting!I was quite surprised at the hate – real, steam-out-of-ears hatred – that some have for the Catalans (or those angling for independence, at least). Our nationalists’ heart isn’t really in it for the most part – happy to feed off the beast, at least those with power (and not mere sticker-stickerers).
I wonder if the situation where you are mightn’t be one of those ‘black swan’ events we are told about… the potential to turn into something quite nasty, right in the middle of Europe. Interesting times ahead! ¡Suerte!-

Thanks Bandini. Yes, I agree things may turn out bad, particularly if Rajoy retains power in the forthcoming elections? I live in a tiny mountain village, (the only foreigner) and the desire for independencia is their hope for a better future, even before the dark days of Franco´s reign of terror. Having said that, I doubt that it will ever come to fruition, because the political parties are so divided and spend more time arguing amongst themselves, than getting a consensus for building a serious plan for governing. History repeating itself, and I´m afraid that´s exactly why their rag-bag factions lost the Civil War.
Anyway, whatever the future has in store, I’m so happy living here with the most kind welcoming people for the last 17 years, and trust you are enjoying the same in the Canaries?
I never will return to that country I was previously proud to be born in, but now ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In Catalan, wishing you Bon a Nit!-

Whereas I am ON a tiny island! – surrounded by foreigners! I’m not complaining, it’s quite nice seeing people on their holidays, happy & smiling… but a tiny village sounds quite appealing (just not the one where the almost-mother-in-law lives)!
I’m not ready to rule out a return to the UK, though – who knows what’s around the corner? – but it’s certainly a relaxed, stress-free place compared to many towns back ‘home’, never mind London. (I didn’t really choose the place, though: we – my girlfriend and I – came to a joint decision that my opinion wasn’t going to hold much sway in the negotiations, so here I am! And as crazy as it sounds, I don’t half miss miserable weather sometimes, really horrible damp & cold weather that I’d be moaning about if I had to wake up it to every morning… memories.)All the best for the 20th. I’m staying neutral! ¡Buenas noches!

“Who was this mad man?”
What kind of father lumbers his son with the name Hilary? The bonkers Wedgie Benn kind.
Saying we’re linking to YouTube, these guys remind us who the Hilary is –https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QXbrS3Msgww

I quite like the name, as it ‘appens.
I recall ambling up Holland Park Avenue one sunny day, seeing his father strolling towards me; he smiled & nodded, as I imagine he must have done to everyone. Being easily swayed, I’ve had him down as ‘a good man’ ever since. I’d certainly take him over his son, judging by yesterday’s performance.-

At my school you would have been beaten up every day – god, they’d have done it if you’d had a “posh” name, never mind a woman’s!
Wayne used to needle Laurence Harvey when they were filming “The Alamo” movie. Once Wayne yelled at Harvey “Can’t you even walk like a man, you limey faggot?”. Harvey turned and shouted back “Did you say something, Marion?”
Evelyn Waugh married a woman called Evelyn – it made life confusing.

My Amerikan uncle was a Marion too, from the deep racist south! And following the Latin custom over here, lots of men are named after their mothers. Personally, I´d have loved to have been Johnny Cash’s “Boy named Sue”!

Anthony Wedgewood Benn was perhaps the only notable Post Master General in 20th Century British history. He piloted through the new laws that the state socialists of the day thought necessary to stop the corruption of British youth by those pirate radio, capitalist free-thinkers. Hilary’s dad forced the end of the Pirate genre and the creation of the State version: Radio One.
After it’s first year of operation, Radio One was to then give the entre to the British BBC mainstream culture based in London, to an oddly itinerant Yorkshyre man, hailing unashamedly from oop North. Savile was his name and the rest used to be history, before history became bunk. Funny how it happens gays ‘n’gals, now -then, now – then.

Something else used to be used, too: Hilary Benn’s apparent opposition to air strikes.

Duh! “… used to be history, too…”
Gives me a chance for another link, though, to the snappily-titled ‘Lawfare’:

That, it would seem, is the basis on which Benn Jr. has had his mind changed. Hmmm. One for the lawyers to ponder, perhaps.

Tony “Concorde” Benn. Who wrote this in his diary of one of the worst killers and repressors of all time –
“Had a long talk to the Chinese First Secretary at the embassy — a very charming man called Liao Dong — and said how much I admired Mao Tse tung or Zedong, the greatest man of the twentieth century”
The greatest man of the 20th century! Benn was way beyond just a being an addle brained fool. Mass murder it seems doesn’t matter when you do it for socialism; ask a Trotskyite.
The pirate bill was prepared in Benn’s day, but put through by his successor, a machine northern Labour politician called Edward Short. Short came from up round my way, and I once had to shake his hand. Like Benn, he was one of those who help support the old cliche about only the good dying young; Short reached 99.
To Hell with Benn, the English Phillipe Egalite of the hard left – who would have gone the same way if those he admired had taken power.

There was me, that is Hubert, sat in front of the puter in my toofles, viddying well this real choodessny bit o sinny about these real grazhny deds giving the old in-out-in-out to some malenky devotchkas, real horrorshow! O my brother, Bog forgive me, I have been infected to the very core of my gulliver by Nadsat ever since I were a molodoy malchick!
Brilliant as ever Pet, simply brilliant! Thanks.
P.s. Hearing the ‘World in Action’ theme music really got to me. The memories, what a great piece of music and the kind of real, intelligent, prime time, investigative journalism that no longer exists anymore! Not dumbed down enough for today’s audience do doubt. Sad.

An excellent addition to your oeuvre, Pet! The spoof BBC4 doc is brilliant, as indeed are your skills with voices and video editing. Apart from copyright claims, might it be construed as libellous to the living? I hope you have had some good legal advice. The Clockwork Orange footage in the new video is well borrowed.
It is indeed a serious subject, a sort of slow-motion crash between the culturally accepted norms of the early 21st Century and those of the Swinging Sixties, with bodies and bits of wreckage flying off everywhere.
