“physics seems (Higgs boson aside) to have ground to a halt”: he’s wrong about the Higgs Boson – it’s a 1960s particle. All CERN did was spend gazillions proving that Higgs (and a few of his contemporaries) were right. For physics to have advanced, CERN would have had to prove them wrong.
