That part about Barack Obama saying nothing and Ed Miliband requiring an interpreter put me in mind of an old apocryphal story about Germany in the 1930’s, of all things.
Briefly, the story is that Ernst Hanfstangl, a high-society Harvard-educated German-American friend of Der Fuhrer’s was working for Goebbels as a deputy info minister in dealing with English-language reporters. He asks some of them, “strictly ‘entre nous,’ of course,” how the people in their countries see Der Fuhrer when he is depicted in the newsreels giving speeches. Ernst is told that, to someone who doesn’t understand a word of what Schicklgruber is saying, he comes off as a bit of “a wild-eyed fire-breather.”
Ernst: “I understand every word he says– and he STILL comes off as ‘a wild-eyed fire-breather’!”Just imagine, if Ed M DID sound intelligible– and if Barack Obama sounded intelligent. Or then again– maybe don’t. As Peggy Mitchell might have put it, “It ain’ werf it.”
