Ditch Socialism as a political ideology
And Capitalism as a political ideology
If nobody can agree on what these things mean
Then implementing them is no more than a dream
If we can’t even agree on what these terms mean
Then their implementation is no more than a dream

Philosophy aside
It’s the joules that we find
And the facts of biology that keep us alive
So many barriers to the perfect life
Yet we still find time to make new divides
Old reasons to cast aside new ideas
Malignant politicians who are totally indifferent to true public opinion
To the people’s pain
Our loss is nobody’s gain
Such a predictable shame
That the rain falls dense both up and downstream
And fills the flood plains
Ignoring humanity, these theories are inherently flawed
We need a new social contract
A new way of making law
But the conviction that they’re right and all the others are wrong
Explains why we’re failing to move along
They’re convinced that they’re right and all others are wrong
And this helps to explain why we haven’t moved on

Ditch Liberalism as a political ideology
And Conservatism as a political ideology
If nobody can agree on what these things mean
Then implementing them is no more than a dream
If we can’t even agree on what these terms mean
Then their implementation is no more than a dream

Our similarities outweigh our differences
How has it come to this?
When all we want is what’s best for our parents and kids
Picture a structure that incentivises clean air
Instead of short-term thinking and high train fares
A culture of resilience, tolerance of those who are different
We need to rethink our systems
Outside of the confines of politics and imperialism
Occupy and Tea Party look at two sides of one coin
From New York to Portland, Boston to Des Moines
They both protest the concentration of power
Even if their focus is on different actors
These people should work together to make change possible
Put aside their differences and learn from each other
Realise that we’re all brothers, we’re all sisters
With the capacity to listen, but we don’t when we should
Otherwise we’d realise that we’re all misunderstood
We don’t listen to each other as often as we should
If we did, then we’d realise that we’re all misunderstood

Cough. Capitalism is NOT a political ideology. It is an economic theory. Very different things indeed.

You could also call Socialism an economic theory, or you could call it the political ideology that supports such a theory. Political ideology is about where you allocate power, and both Capitalism and Socialism, utopian as they may be, are concerned with this issue. So we can’t even agree on that!
