I followed a link to Mrs Dale’s Diary when it was going full steam. It happened to be the one where he’d donated money to a ‘worthy cause’, the ex-Labour MP who got disqualified for implying his Liberal opponent supported terrorists. There were long and academic comments disagreeing with him, and his reply to them all was “YOU IDIOTS!”

Indeed he is – although I did manage to climb on top of the poor old boy in January…….shadow of his former self he was by the end of the month.

The way the rankings are worked out now does give an advantage to the ‘tribal blogs’, It’s much more dependant on people hitting the ‘retweet button’ rather than just links from other bloggers. People like Liberal Conspiracy who have a large and loyal fan base will always top the charts these days, the only time independent bloggers get a look in is if they are have a strong original story that goes viral on Twitter. Its not the number of retweets in a month that counts, its the number of individual Twitter accounts that link back to a story. I had 2,300 individual retweets on one story in December – and that took me up to No 2, which will give you some idea of the number of readers that need to be involved to make a dent in the position of say – The Guardian blogs RSS feed. The only links which count are the ones which appear in RSS feeds – links in comments mean nothing. Come to that, links on Guido’s side bar don’t count either. They don’t go out on his RSS feed. quite complicated!

Over on Twitter, Polly Toynbee was congratulating Richard Murphy on his standing on the economic blogs, crowing that he was ‘sticking it to the right wingers’.
Poor deluded woman clearly has no idea how Wikio ratings are assessed, and therefore doesn’t realise that all the links and Tweets saying ‘Look what that clown Murphy has said now, ahahahaha!’ are pushing up his rating…

There was a time I used to be quite techno savvy. However, I don’t even know what a retweet is and I got quite lost following that.
I don’t know if that is because I have now past 30? Then again, perhaps in twitters case I am too young. I understand that it is a medium for the more seasoned among us. (typed with all due respect for the well seasoned)

Just click the green re-tweet button at the end of every story here on AR. Also click on the wikio button if you like a particular story.

Not giving up.
As Anna says, the system is complex. In December I had an extra 4,000 unique visitors for that month and I slid down the rankings. (I know blogs aren’t ranked according to visitor stats, but it would be useful for my blog!)
This month was another all time high and I have plenty of back-links so it will be interesting to see where I end up.

When 6 of the top 10 are lefty you know something is amiss (haha) despite the “in opposition” boost. Would CH be top if all pages counted as the same blog?
Re Iain Dale, his giving up a few months back would have made his ranking crash and burn; I doubt he’ll be in the next top 50.
To be 11th when the top 10 are “hard core” is a supreme achievement.

Thanks for explaing how these rankings work Anna. It tells me that by shunning Twitter and deleting the RSS feed on Boggart Blog (too many people were nicking our stuff by displaying full items in their blog) I have opted for eternal anonymity. Who are Wikio anyway. Ever since I read on Wikipedia that Charles Darwin was a homosexual paedophile who renounced evolution and was ‘born again’ on his deathbead I have not taken any notice of anything with Wiki in the name. Apart from anything else the syllable brings to mind Timmy Mallett.
I’ve always thought ratings were overrated.
